ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations)

The US regulations controlling the export of defense articles and services on the United States Munitions List.

The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) are the US regulations, codified at 22 CFR Parts 120 to 130, that control the export and temporary import of defense articles and defense services on the United States Munitions List. They are administered by the State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC).

Companies that manufacture, export, or broker covered defense articles must register with DDTC and obtain licenses for transfers. ITAR is one of the two main pillars of US export control, alongside the Export Administration Regulations that cover dual-use goods. Whether a given component falls under ITAR depends on whether it is on the Munitions List.
